THE Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) of Zamboanga Peninsula opened its campaign with a rousing 3-2 victory over Maguindanao United of Armm as the Mindanao Peace Games (MPG)-organized Mindanao Football Tournament opened on Monday, May 22, at the Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Football Field in Matina, Davao City.
Johnred Yamongan knocked in two goals for the Lee Lanuza-mentored Adzu as teammate Abdel Asirim added one goal in the event sponsored by One Meralco Foundation and Mizuno.
Marvin Mendez made a brace for Maguindanao United but the team still fell short.
FC Meralco Manila team captain James Younghusband, meanwhile, graced the opening of the tournament to inspire the six participating teams from different regions of Mindanao including ADZU, Iligan Medical Center College, Addu, Father Saturnino Urios University, Surallah Football Club and Maguindanao United of Armm.
The MPG program which is originally designed for female athletes, aims to elevate the culture of sports.
The five-day activity will not only feature sports but will also hold storytelling sessions.
One of the sponsors Mizuno, however, will be giving away spikes to the best striker, best midfielder, best defender, and best goalkeeper of the tournament.
