Friday, May 05, 2017

THREE of the 13 Cagayan de Oro bets on Thursday, May 4, successfully opened their bid in the first day of the 2017 National Age Group Chess Championships held at the Robinsons Galleria in Cebu City.

Adrian Othniel Yulo, Me Ann Baclayon and Samantha Irish Balquin came with victories in the opening round of their respective age group categories.

Yulo defeated Stephen Von Estavillo in the under-16 boys division, while Baclayon beat Rohanisah Buto in the distaff side of the under-16.

Fast-rising and first time age group campaigner Samantha Irish Balquin, daughter of chess trainer Johnnel Balquin, pulled a win against Mikhaila Oreta in the under-8 girls. David Rey Ancheta, Clyde Saraos, Janiella Maeren Garcia and siblings Ronald and Ruelle Canino were held into draws with their respective foes.

The other Canino siblings Romeo and Rhea succumbed with opening defeats in the under-20 boys and under-12 girls categories, respectively. Tristan Ibaoc lost against equally strong Darry Bernardo in the under-18 boys, while Chargaets Andres and Joegawyn Garcia Jr. also share the same fate in the under-10 boys.
